The authorities in Scotland are pleased with the “speed and volume of interest” shown for the £10 million prize.
The Scottish Government, which earlier this year launched a contest in its quest for a groundbreaking wave or tidal power technology, has now received 100 registrations of interest to compete for the Saltire Prize.
These registrations have come from scientists and businesses across 23 countries and five continents.
The latest update was provided by First Minister Alex Salmond during his visit to China, where he met Professor Lu Yongxiang, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and one of the 11 Saltire Prize challenge committee members.
The Government has already received registrations from Mexico, the US, India, France, Norway, Spain and the UK.
The Saltire Prize fulfils the commitment from the Scottish Government, set out in the 2007 SNP manifesto, to support emerging technologies that can contribute to sustainable power generation. It is estimated that there is 21.5 Gigawatts (GW) of commercial marine energy capacity that could be harnessed from the waters around Scotland.
