San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has shared the City has filed an application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to develop wave energy off its coast.
The project could generate 10-30 MW of power, and ultimately expand to 100 MW.
The proposal grows out of a recent wave power study the City completed, with support from the Sidney Frank Foundation and others. The study confirms that wave power is a promising resource off Ocean Beach in San Francisco, according to Newsom.
Newsom mentioned that the project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of generating electric power from waves about eight miles off the west coast of San Francisco.
The next step in this project will be to select technologies and undertake environmental studies to ensure minimal impact on marine animals, fishing, shipping and recreational uses.
Referring to varoius technologies from the likes of Pelamis, Wave Dragon, OceanLinx and Aquabuoy, the Mayor acknowledged that at this stage the plans include considering all these options and finding one which “work best in San Francisco’s waters”.
